Workplace Needs Assessments

Determining the Organization's Occupational Health Needs:

Assessment

Ideally, the assessment phase should begin with a mission statement that outlines the organization's health and safety goals and objectives. Once these are established, a plant walk through and assessment are essential activities for determining occupational health services appropriate for the facility. This survey should ensure that the following are addressed:

  • Chemical agents with potential risk because of carcinogenicity or toxic health effects, especially those that are government regulated or recommended for medical surveillance.

  • Physical agents such as noise, radiation, heat and cold.

  • Biological agents such as bacteria, viruses, or the toxic products of those agents.

  • Ergonomic stresses that result from repetitive motions.

An adequate assessment includes two phases: first, identification of potential health risks and regulatory compliance issues and second, determination of the occupational health services to address those risks. The specific type of services appropriate for any facility depends on the nature of the operation and the results of the plant site review, but some services may be appropriate for any manufacturing facility, including pre-placement evaluations and treatment of work-related injuries; please view the range of occupational health services we offer here.

Program Development

The results of the assessment phase should be thoroughly reviewed with senior management and the health and safety team, including employee representatives.

An Occupational Health Program is based on a clearly defined occupational and environmental health policy. This policy must be developed by senior management and must assign responsibility to an individual who reports at a high level within the organization. An effective occupational health service balances employee and company rights and obligations.

Program credibility can be maintained only if the service maintains a neutral, objective role in preventing illness and injury among employees.
