Lift Truck Operator Medical Assessments

This assessment applies to all potential and currently certified operators of lift trucks as defined by The Industrial Truck Association in Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard B335-04. Medical screening of Class 3 Hand truck operators is optional and will be conducted at the discretion of individual employers.

The following outlines some of the medical and physical guidelines that may be considered in setting requirements

  • Vision testing including visual acuity to view all signs, instructions; and labels necessary for specific job. Ability to differentiate between colors if necessary for job. Peripheral vision. Good judgment of space including height, depth and distance. If required- use of corrective lenses while operating the lift truck

  • Hearing- ability to hear all warning signs within the workplace, as necessary for specific job and if required use of hearing aids while operating the lift truck

  • Physical –absence of physical impairments, neurological disorders or other health disorders that can affect the safe operation of the lift truck, and sufficient strength, endurance, agility and coordination to meet the demands of the job, which can include movement of the neck, upper and lower limbs and trunk

This program consists of

  • Vision assessment every three years

  • Audiometric testing every two years

  • Assessment by Occupational Physician which will include a medical and health history, every three years or more often as determined by the Occupational Health Nurse

  • Employee will report any changes in Health status and or medications to the RN/OHN for immediate review
